Traws Write up

Posted in Skate News at 2:05 pm by Skatescum

Sat

The bales arrived ahead of schedule thanks to the efforts of Derek Round, Ian Round and a sick Ian Dawson early that morning. With the course baled, closed to traffic and now almost dry the riders started bombing the hill.

The Lugers, Dirt Surfer and Mountain Board all started at the very top of the hill giving them a long cruising section before the drop off. The Skateboarders and Street Turtle riders started at the “old” start. With the build up of winter grime and damp surface it was soon discovered that the road was gnarlier than first appearances suggested. Great fun was had, with the Lugers going as fast as possible, comparing speeds on their GPS recorders. The Skateboarders did the first few runs on their sliding decks and with the damp greasy surface some great moves were pulled before gaining confidence and cruising, then bombing the hill on their downhill decks. Jason Absalom had the time of his life riding the Street Turtle, achieving a new personal best speed on it.

Saturday evening began in the Holiday Village pub for some great grub and a mini UKGSA meeting to make some decisions on upcoming events and other items. Everyone then moved to one of the cabins where a projector and screen was set up and an evening of Saft and Boneless films were shown. Films included 2005 UKGSA races, Chamrousse and Bukolik freerides with hilarious moments and great riding.

Sun

Saturday was damp, Sunday was a downpour. Most were happy to sand about chatting, talking Skateboard and Luge. A few hardcore riders (2 Luge, 2 Stand-Up, Turtle, Dirt Surfer and Mountain Board) refused to be beaten and hit the hill. Despite the rain it seemed like the grip on the course had improved and Jason Absalom was blasting down the hill on his Luge faster than anyone the previous day. All the winter grime must have been washed away.

By lunch the rain had stopped, but everyone (bar Jason Absalom) was wet, cold and had had enough. So the decision was made to clear up and head for home.

Thanks

Thanks to all the riders, to Saft and Boneless for the films, to Luke for the projector and sheet, thanks to the marshals for standing in the rain and wind and thanks to everyone who helped set out and clear up the bales. Most thanks to Derek Round, Ian Round and Ian Dawson for collecting the bales from their home and returning them despite illness and injuries.

The UKGSA hopes to be organising another Downhill Dragon freeride at Traws this year. Keep your fingers crossed for a hot, dry summer.

Skinned Alive Film Review

Posted in Skate News at 7:33 pm by Skatescum

I was the first person in the UK to own this film having hunted down Bart Saric after seeing it in concrete wave magazine, ha my two fave things skating and tattoos all in one film, does it get much better?

Skinned Alive is all about the correlation between skating and tattooing, lots of skaters over the years have had some pretty serious ink, jason jesse, eric dressen the Godoys, jay adams etc, Bart has combined both the elements to make a classic film plenty of hardcore skate action and  interviews with all the boys.

I can safely say, this film is THE SHIT !!!

if you love skating and have tattoos you will love this film

If you don’t have any ink, this may take you on a journey from which you will never return !!!

Check Bart out at his web site http://www.b-artwork.com

inspiration

Posted in Skate News at 10:24 pm by Skatescum

Where is your inspiration coming from?

Listening to music has always revved me up for a hardcore session whether it be skating, surfing or some violent rumpy pumpy !!!

my bro and i would have tapes for going to the beach “a surf psyche up tape” bands such as TSOL and gangajang, always guaranteed to get us going, always blasted out at full blast

so i though i would compile a list of what gets me going when i am rolling, this will be an ongoing kinda top 20 (maybe more maybe less) sorta thing, keep up at the back this is going to be a rough ride to hell and back !

(not in any order)

  1. The duane peters gunfight - war with you  (you dont wanna war with duane)
  2. Agent Orange - everything turns grey  (hollywell bay late 80’s - smell the crete)
  3. Tricky - Black Steel  (rare that a cover version is better than the original)
  4. Clutch - impetus  (pure rock n roll)
  5. 59 Times the pain - got it all in sight  (just quality punk from sweden)
  6. TSOL - its too late (think mark Foo RIP surfing big Sunset)
  7. Black Flag - Rise Above
  8. Youth Brigade - Did you really want to (die)
  9. Abrahams Meatplow - swapping haymakers (great for getting tattooed to as well)
  10. firehose -  Brave Captain  (Natas, streets on fire, nuff said)
  11. Alex Reece - feel the sunshine (from physical grafitti - the film that changed my life)
  12. Coughing up Blood - too fat to skate (you are never too fat)
  13. The Perv’s - pieces of you  (from Bart Sarics epic skate flick - skinned alive)

that will do for now i reckon, this list will be updated as and when

what are you wearing when you skate ?

Posted in Skate News at 7:34 pm by Skatescum

I Saw this question posted on a well known skate forum a few weeks ago, who gives a flying fuck what you are wearing!

As a good friend said to me in the car coming back from a heavy downhill slide session “you smell pretty bad mate” and indeed i did, i smelt of stale piss!

just get out there and do it, wear a bin bag and stink!

Matts boat update

Posted in Blower's Hot Air at 2:39 pm by Blower

Well the engine is still out but i’ve nearly finished the new interior. The new floor is ready to be dropped in and then Chewy has kindly offered to help me fibre-glass it in place and then gel-coat the engine bay. I asked him about laying a sheet of carbon in for good looks but he laughed at me and said it would cost more than the boat would ever be worth, so carpet it is.

In the meantime i have to get the starter motor re-conditioned and a small bit of wealding done on the exhaust manifold.

I stumbled across an amazing deal on the vinyl for the seats, i managed to get 30m for £10. Then i found out that it usually costs £15-£16 per meter!!!!!!!!!! So i got £450 or so worth of vinyl for £10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also think i might have a hot pink carpet to go in too.

Thats about it for now, i’ll let you know what happens next!

Matts boat

Posted in Blower's Hot Air at 2:09 pm by Blower

I always said that i would never buy a boat, instead i would buy a bucket and through £100 a week in it. That way you would have something to show for the money you are essentially throwing away.

But back in July last year i was offered an old jet boat on a very sturdy galvanised trailer for £250 and i just couldn’t resist so i bought it. (Decided that the trailer was worth £250 alone)

After a bit of research i found out that it had a 1600 escort engine in it that surprise surprise didn’t have much life in it although it would turn over it just wouldn’t fire. So the advice i got was to just replace it, its only an escort engine so it’ll be easy to find another one and it shouldnt cost alot. Problem was that it’s a mark II escort engine so there not so common. A couple of months later thanks to Dickie Dyer i had an engine straight out of a cortina that is in full working order.

Since then i have taken the old engine out, stripped it for the parts i need and started to fit them to the replacement engine.

The interior is pretty shot at the moment so the boat looks like a complete wreck and reminds me of the kind of thing you see on ebay “unfinished project from 20 years ago”.

Then deadline is easter and i’ve promised myself it will be finished by then.

I’ll keep you posted on all the progress as it happens

Anyone for Tarifa????????

Posted in Blower's Hot Air at 1:14 pm by Blower

Tids and i are planning to go for a long weekend in Tarifa sometime soon. Fly from Exeter to Malaga, hire a car and drive down to Tarifa ( about 1.5 hours i think). Flights shoud be cheap and accomadation should be even cheaper so if you wanna come then let us know. This won’t be a buisness trip just a quick break to re-coupe before the summer comes around again.

More details to follow but i you think it sounds like a good idea then get in touch.
